The Sindh government has announced a big development budget for Karachi in the fiscal year 2025-26, focusing on transport, infrastructure, water, and healthcare improvements for residents of the metropolis.
To improve public transport in Karachi, Rs 1.1 billion will be spent on diesel-hybrid buses and Rs 3 billion on EV and double-decker buses, while a complete system of 500 buses in Karachi is also part of the budget.
Under a rent-to-own scheme, 100 new 12-meter-long electric buses will hit Karachi’s roads from July 2025, aiming to ease urban mobility and reduce pollution.
To improve water supply, Rs 119.7 million will upgrade the Dumlottee pumping station at Gadap Town Malir, while Rs. 12.7 billion will fund the Hub Canal Project for citywide water needs.
Several infrastructure projects for Karachi are included in the budget, such as Rs 5 billion for rebuilding Allama Rashid Turabi Road, Mewa Shah Road, and the 4K to Gulshan-e-Maymar corridor.
Malir, Maripur, and Korangi will receive new sewage and road systems, also worth Rs 5 billion. These aim to improve drainage and road access.
The upgradation of parks like Baradari Park and North Nazimabad under Karachi Neighborhood and CLICK projects is also included in the budget 2025-26, with Rs 80 million allocated to convert grounds in Clifton Block 5, Saudabad, Malir, Landhi, and North Karachi into inclusive parks.
According to CM Sindh, work is progressing rapidly on the Yellow Line and Jam Sadiq Bridge under the Karachi Urban Mobility Project, announcing that the bridge will be inaugurated soon.
“50 percent of the 29-kilometer-long Red Line BRT work will be completed in the next six months as per schedule,” he said.
CM Sindh in his speech asserted that the first phase of Karachi Safe City is in the final stages of completion at a cost of Rs 6.6 billion, its second phase will also be completed in the next fiscal year.
As per CM Murad announced that the major projects in Karachi, including Shahrah-e-Bhutto, Karimabad Underpass, Korangi Causeway Bridge, Gujjar Nala Flyover, and heritage restoration, will be completed in the next financial year.
The first 5-Million Gallons per Day (MGD) desalination project will begin under a Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) model.
In the health sector, the budget includes a new OPD in NICVD, a 100-bed emergency rooms in Baldia Hospital, and a 12-storey medical tower at JPMC.
CM Sindh, in collaboration with the Edhi Foundation, also announced the establishment of a Bilquis Edhi Breast Radiation center in the next fiscal year. Meanwhile, the grant of Indus Hospital has been increased from Rs 5 billion to Rs 8 billion.
