Heatwave Alert: Sindh reports over 840 heatstroke cases in two months

Sindh heatwave

A severe heatwave has struck Sindh province during the Eid holidays, as predicted by the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

From June 7th to 12th, extremely hot weather has impacted several districts, including Jacobabad, Dadu, Larkana, and Shaheed Benazirabad, where maximum temperatures hit 46°C.

To tackle this heatwave, the government has treated 844 heatstroke cases across Sindh so far, with no casualties reported. Unfortunately, 74 livestock deaths have been confirmed, mainly goats and cows, due to the extreme heat stress.

The districts of Shaheed Benazirabad and Khairpur reported the highest numbers of heatstroke cases.

The Government of Sindh, alongside the Start Network (READY Pakistan) and humanitarian partners, has established heatstroke camps in 21 districts.

These include stabilization centers in Jacobabad and Mirpur Buriro, providing relief and awareness about climate change impacts and health safety in this heatwave crisis in Sindh.

Hyderabad division reported 163 cases of heatstroke, followed by Shaheed Benazirabad with 122 and Mirpurkhas with 107 cases.

Karachi, despite being a coastal region, reported 30 cases, largely due to rising inland temperatures affecting urban areas.

To raise awareness, banners and IEC materials have been distributed in various cities, with warnings shared through social, print, and electronic media.

Citizens are advised to follow safety measures, use water wisely, and avoid labor-intensive outdoor work during peak sunlight hours.
