High magnitude earthquake may hit Karachi soon, Shahbaz Laghari

Karachi Earthquake

Intermittent earthquake tremors have shaken Karachi over the past few days, leaving residents anxious and fearful.

While the tremors have so far been low in magnitude with no reported damage, concerns have risen due to a warning issued by a private organization.

Shahbaz Laghari, the representative from the Earthquake News and Research Center, has predicted a high-magnitude earthquake of 5.0 on the Richter scale by Friday.

The center claims the epicenter will be in the Karachi Sea, making the period from Monday to Friday critical for the city’s residents.

Shahbaz Laghari, the organization’s representative, also warned of a potential tsunami risk.

However, these claims have been strongly rejected by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). Amir Haider Laghari, head of the department’s Tsunami Warning Cell at PMD, emphasized that earthquakes cannot be predicted and dismissed the private agency’s forecast.

“Without specialized equipment and seismic models, such predictions hold no scientific weight,” he stated.

Laghari added that the recent tremors are likely due to movement along the Landhi fault line, one of several active faults beneath Karachi.

He assured citizens that the intensity is expected to decrease within a week, ruling out any immediate tsunami threat.

The Meteorological Department urges citizens to stay calm, avoid panic, and rely only on official updates for safety information.
