Heavy monsoon rains may trigger floods, warns met office

immediate flood risks

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a monsoon alert, warning of immediate flood risks due to above-normal rainfall expected across central, southern, and northeastern parts of the country.

According to DG Meher Sahibzad, the monsoon rainfall will span July to September, but flood threats may last from June 15 to October 15 due to rain and glacier melt.

The Met Office forecasts heavier-than-normal rains in central and southern Pakistan, as well as in northeastern Punjab and Azad Kashmir – areas prone to floods in low-lying zones.

While the northern areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan may see less rainfall, temperatures will remain high, increasing the speed of glacier melting in mountain ranges.

As a result, the Indus River’s water level may rise sharply, and reservoirs like Tarbela and Mangla Dams may reach capacity, increasing the chances of downstream overflow.

Landslides and river floods are expected in hilly areas like Malakand, Hazara, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Azad Kashmir, and parts of northern Punjab due to intense rainfall activity.

The DG has instructed all relevant agencies to remain on high alert and ensure swift responses to potential emergencies during this high-risk season.

The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to northern regions, and to stay informed about weather updates to prevent loss of life or property.

People living in flood-prone areas are urged to follow safety guidelines and prepare emergency plans in advance to minimize the impact of any natural disaster.
