Lyari expressway overhaul to ease Karachi traffic jams

Lyari Expressway Overhaul

Karachi’s Lyari Expressway will undergo a major upgrade aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving flow, following a meeting between Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Federal Minister for Communications Aleem Khan.

The National Highway Authority (NHA) has committed to upgrading interchanges and exploring engineering-based solutions to ease heavy traffic pressure, especially at Sohrab Goth.

Originally designed to handle port traffic to the motorway, the expressway currently accommodates only light vehicles due to safety concerns highlighted in a third-party audit.

However, the NHA has proposed allowing heavy traffic during non-peak hours. To further streamline movement, the Chief Minister suggested a separate service road to divert city traffic, easing congestion hotspots. Both federal and provincial governments agreed to expedite the project.

The Lyari Expressway’s overhaul is expected to cut travel times, enhance urban mobility, and boost trade logistics.

This initiative is part of a broader push to revamp Karachi’s transport infrastructure and ensure smoother connectivity between the port and national highways.
