The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has recovered Rs12.59 billion in outstanding water dues after the Sindh Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) action.
According to Dawn news report, the dues date back to 2019 to 2021, when a total of Rs31.77 billion was owed to the water utility. This included Rs20.6bn from federal institutions, Rs9.8bn from Sindh departments, and Rs1.25bn from municipal bodies.
The recovery was made from federal and provincial departments, the PAC was informed.
So far, Rs10.37bn has been recovered from federal bodies and Rs2.21bn from Sindh departments. However, no payment has been made by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), which owes Rs1.25bn.
Key recoveries include Pakistan Steel Mills (Rs6.84bn), Gadap and Ibrahim Hyderi towns (Rs2bn), and Public Health Engineering Department (Rs425m). Others include Pakistan Air Force (Rs57m) and Pakistan Navy (Rs4.55m). PAC Chairman Nisar Khuhro urged the federal government to pay the remaining Rs10.31bn quickly. The PAC had originally raised the issue during a review meeting on Nov 27, 2024.
