Water Retaliation: China Could Block India’s Supply If Pakistan Cut Off, Experts

China block India’s water

Experts at a seminar in Karachi warned that China could block India’s water if India stops water flow to Pakistan during future conflicts.

The event was held by the Pakistan Institute of International Affairs (PIIA) on Saturday to discuss rising Pakistan-India tensions.

Dr Masuma Hasan, chairperson of PIIA, said young researchers were asked to explore different themes of the conflict, especially after India blamed Pakistan for the Pahalgam attack on April 22 without proof.

India later suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and Pakistan suspended the Simla Agreement. A brief military conflict followed, ending in a ceasefire after US President Donald Trump stepped in.

Researcher Mohammad Usman explained that if India blocks water during dry seasons, it would hurt Pakistani farmers, but building the infrastructure for water control could take years and billions. He added, “Just like India can block Pakistan’s water, China could block India’s, especially in the Brahmaputra River region.”

Another presenter, Syeda Maliha Sehar, spoke on military strategy and how Pakistan used Chinese technology to match Indian surveillance. She said this showed Pakistan’s strength through strategic precision, not just escalation.

Speakers also covered cyber warfare, narratives, and media manipulation.

It was noted that misinformation during the conflict included false news like attacks on Karachi port and fake stories about captured officers.

A person in the audience even said, “Thanks to Narendra Modi, for once, Pakistan is united.”
