Three terrorism accused granted bail in RAW-funding case

RAW terrorism case

A Karachi court has granted bail to three men accused of terrorism, allegedly carried out with funding from India’s intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

The suspects, who were arrested in 2020, have spent five years in jail awaiting trial.

During the hearing, the state prosecutor informed the court that the men were allegedly involved in orchestrating acts of terrorism in Karachi, with financial and strategic assistance from the RAW.

He claimed the accused were apprehended within the jurisdiction of the Airport Police Station in 2020 during an operation based on intelligence reports.

The prosecution alleged that the trio maintained direct links with RAW and had received financial aid to carry out attacks aimed at destabilizing peace in Pakistan’s largest city.

While specific incidents linked to the suspects were not detailed in the courtroom proceedings, the nature of the charges suggested serious offenses under Pakistan’s anti-terrorism laws.

The defense, however, argued that the suspects have been imprisoned for over five years without conclusion of their trial.

The defense lawyer emphasized the constitutional right of the accused to a fair and timely trial, stating that prolonged detention without a verdict was a miscarriage of justice.

“They have already served more time than many convicts,” the lawyer stated, requesting the court to consider their release on bail pending further legal proceedings.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted bail to the accused, citing the lengthy detention period and the ongoing delay in trial proceedings.

The court ordered each of the suspects to submit a bail bond of Rs. 550,000.
