In a major development, Sindh government has made progress in installing GPS trackers in tankers to control the rising number of road accidents in Karachi.

According to Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah, GPS trackers will help monitor water tankers and other heavy vehicles that operate on Karachi’s busy and dangerous roads.

He said this system would reduce traffic accidents by controlling movement and routes of large vehicles, especially in areas where accidents often occur.

As of Sunday, the CM was told that a total of 3,391 water tankers have been equipped with GPS trackers which are commonly seen in different parts of Karachi, often on narrow roads.

Apart from water tankers, GPS trackers have also been installed in 28 dumpers, 82 oil tankers, 214 buses, and 214 small trucks, officials confirmed.

The new system will soon cover 2,763 large trucks and 137 trailers running in Karachi, providing a wide digital map of heavy vehicle movement.

Syed Murad Ali Shah stressed the importance of road safety laws and asked all vehicle owners to follow regulations strictly for public safety.

Since April 9, officials have seized 31,677 motorcycles and taken action against 2,719 vehicles with fancy number plates and tinted glass.

As a result, total enforcement cases have reached 1,000 heavy and light traffic vehicles, with many under temporary seizure by inspectors.

Authorities have recommended cancelling registration of 25 vehicles, while 491 others are being reviewed for possible suspension due to safety violations.

Murad Ali Shah stated that GPS tracking will help manage road discipline, reduce traffic flow issues, and improve enforcement across Karachi’s urban transport system.
