Transport strike paralyzes Karachi port for third consecutive day

Karachi port

The transporters’ strike at Karachi ports entered its third day, severely impacting the movement of goods across the supply chain network.

In protest against the Sindh government’s crackdown on unfit vehicles, transporters have parked their trucks at stands and warehouses throughout the city, disrupting port activity.

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) confirmed that thousands of containers, including those carrying food items, remain stuck due to the ongoing strike.

Transporter representative Asif Sakhi warned that the stuck cargo is leading to massive financial losses, with detention charges reaching millions of dollars for importers.

Trade operations have nearly collapsed, with 90 percent of port activities suspended, said Amaan Paracha, another leader from the transport sector.

Paracha added that due to the backlog, shipping containers cannot be offloaded, and vessels waiting at sea may soon be forced to divert or delay.

He urged the Sindh government to ease the crackdown temporarily and grant transporters more time to meet vehicle fitness certification requirements to prevent further losses.

Paracha also appealed to FPCCI officials to mediate a solution between the transporters and the provincial government to help break the current deadlock.

The crackdown was initiated by Sindh authorities following a surge in deadly accidents involving unfit heavy vehicles, with over 260 deaths reported in Karachi this year alone.

While safety is essential, critics argue that abrupt enforcement without transitional measures is damaging national trade and worsening the city’s port congestion crisis.

As the strike stretches into the weekend, industry leaders continue to call for dialogue, warning of long term damage to Pakistan’s trade and logistics sectors.
