K-Electric proposes Rs6.62 cut in tariff for Karachi consumers

K-Electic

Power consumers in Karachi are likely to get a major relief, as K-Electric has proposed a Rs6.62 per unit reduction in power tariffs under the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA).

The request was discussed in a public hearing at NEPRA Headquarters, and could offer significant cost savings to eligible consumers.

The proposal also seeks approval of fuel cost charges from July 2023 to February 2025, with K-Electric stating that Rs 13.9 billion in fuel cost adjustments are still pending.

The utility claims this adjustment is necessary due to ongoing fluctuations in fuel prices.

NEPRA Member Rafiq Ahmed Sheikh noted that negative fuel adjustments have been recorded since November, which should have translated into reduced bills.

He criticized K-Electric for bringing older dues forward during a time when consumers were expecting relief.

A consumer representative expressed concerns that the full benefit of these negative adjustments was not passed on to users. This raised questions about transparency and the company’s commitment to public interest.

Sheikh warned K-Electric that if faulty meters aren’t replaced, the company itself will be held financially responsible. He added that such lapses cannot continue at the expense of ordinary consumers.

If NEPRA approves the request, this reduction could offer Rs6.6 billion in relief to power users across Karachi. However, lifeline and protected consumers, prepaid meter users, and EV charging stations are excluded from this benefit.

The outcome of this request is now in NEPRA’s hands, with many consumers eagerly awaiting a decision that could offer much-needed relief amid ongoing economic challenges.
