Biogas project Karachi
  • SSWMB to set up two biogas plants near Bhains Colony.
  • The project will process 6,000 tons of daily animal waste.
  • Locals will get affordable energy and reduced environmental pollution.

Biogas project Karachi has been finalised by the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) to convert animal waste into energy at Bhains Colony, District Malir.

The plan was discussed between SSWMB Managing Director Tariq Ali Nizamani and Bhains Colony Dairy Association, who promised full support for the large-scale biogas project’s success.

The project is part of Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s directive to introduce sustainable energy initiatives and improve environmental conditions across Karachi’s waste-generating areas, especially Bhains Colony.

A second meeting with the Dairy Association from District Malir was recently held to finalise the technical and strategic roadmap of the biogas project.

SSWMB’s plan involves building two biogas plants on Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) land located next to Bhains Colony, Pakistan’s largest buffalo dairy settlement.

According to MD Nizamani, these plants will process animal waste and garbage using safe methods to reduce environmental pollution across the city and nearby water bodies.

He added that protecting the environment, reducing waste, and providing affordable biogas to locals are the top goals of this public-private sector initiative.

Bhains Colony produces nearly 6,000 tons of waste daily from 400,000 animals, making it an ideal site for biogas project Karachi, the MD further stated.

At present, only a small amount of biogas is produced locally, while most waste is dumped into the sea, causing environmental and health concerns.

The dairy association praised the government’s efforts, stating that the project will offer relief to residents and provide clean, affordable energy while protecting the ecosystem.
