Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has assured the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) that development funds for Karachi and Hyderabad will be released soon.
The assurance came during a virtual meeting with MQM-P leaders after the party expressed dissatisfaction with project delays and hinted at reconsidering its position in the ruling coalition.
The meeting, attended by MQM-P leaders Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Syed Mustafa Kamal, Aminul Haq, Javed Hanif, and Khawaja Izharul Hassan, focused on concerns over the federal government’s commitment to funding development projects in Sindh’s two largest cities.
A day earlier, MQM-P MNA Aminul Haq had criticized the government for not meeting the party’s demands and warned that MQM-P might consider shifting to the opposition benches in protest.
Mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, has called on Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to allocate Rs 1500 billion for the development of Karachi, stressing that the city’s needs far exceed the previously discussed Rs 15 billion.
Murtaza Wahab, during a media interaction urged PM to open the national treasury for the city, stressig that Karachi’s issues cannot be solved with just speeches and press conferences.
Wahab also extended an offer to MQM-P, inviting them to collaborate with PPP and bring funds from the federation to address Karachi’s pressing problems.
He pointed out that one of the city’s most significant challenges is the severe shortage of drinking water, questioning how political figures like Farooq Sattar intend to resolve the issue.
He mentioned that Lahore has underground sweet water, but Karachi does not, and the example of Lahore cannot be applied to Karachi when it comes to the water issue.
The Mayor highlighted that while political parties come and go, only those that prioritize public rights remain relevant. He reaffirmed that development efforts are already underway, including work on 106 roads under Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), along with improvements on internal roads.
