The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has reclaimed 7 acres of coastal land worth Rs 60 billion in an operation against encroachments in Younisabad.
According to a KPT statement, illegal structures built on the land were demolished during the operation.
The residents of Younisabad staged a protest against the anti-encroachment operation launched by KPT and blocked the Muaripur Road, resulting in the arrest of three residents by law enforcers.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Pakistan and Sindh Rangers as per KPT’s spokesperson statement, while the police and district administration were unaware of the operation at Younisabad, the DIG-South Syed Asad Raza told local media.
A Rangers spokesperson informed the media that the paramilitary force has been actively participating in the anti-encroachment campaign under the federal government’s directives.
The spokesperson stated that the Prime Minister has instructed all law enforcement agencies, including Rangers, to assist the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) in reclaiming 1,100 acres of encroached land.
However, National Assembly Standing Committee Chairman Qadir Patel criticized the move, stating that targeting old fishermen’s settlements was unjust and strongly opposed the displacement of residents.
