The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has launched a movement against the PECA Amendment Act, announcing a sit-in outside the Parliament House.
PFUJ President Afzal Butt expressed disappointment, stating that while the current government once supported press freedom in opposition, the new law threatens journalists’ rights.
Speaking with local media, Butt recalled how both Asif Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto had previously advocated for press freedom in Parliament, creating high expectations for their stance on the issue.
However, the PECA Amendment Act, according to Butt, would lead to arrests followed by punishments, which he claims marks a direct attack on press freedom.
He further stressed that the PFUJ’s response was not merely a protest but a nationwide movement against the act.
“A sit-in outside Parliament will continue until the law is repealed,” Butt said.
PFUJ is also taking legal action against the PECA Amendment Act, with experts reviewing its provisions.
Although the act’s implementation may be delayed due to pending rules, Butt assured journalists that they would receive legal and humanitarian support.
