Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, revealed that Pakistan Television (PTV) delayed staff salaries due to substantial payments made to acquire broadcasting rights for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
During a briefing at the National Assembly’s information committee, Tarar explained that the move aimed to ensure cricket matches were accessible to everyone, especially in remote areas where PTV is the only option.
The minister acknowledged the 21-day salary delay caused criticism but compared it to private channels, where delays often last months. He also accused private media owners of not paying employees on time despite earning well from other businesses.
The minister shared plans to reform PTV, including cutting unnecessary costs, verifying employee degrees, and removing 12 retired staff rehired at high salaries.
“PTV previously operated on a ‘never-go-home’ policy, where retired staff were rehired on high salaries,” he said.

“Such inefficiencies caused significant financial strain, but we are taking corrective measures,” he added.
He also mentioned hiring private-sector anchors to boost advertising revenue and improve PTV Sports’ performance.
Additionally, Tarar discussed stricter regulations for TV content, proposing a censor board for dramas and ads to ensure family-friendly programming.
He highlighted PTV’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy, including plans to involve cricket stars like Shoaib Akhtar and Shoaib Malik in commentary.
Tarar emphasized the importance of bringing major sports events to Pakistan, saying it unites the nation and promotes cricket across the country.
Despite challenges, he expressed confidence in PTV’s reforms and its role in improving access to sports for all Pakistanis.
