Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, visited the Hub area to inspect the ongoing construction of a new canal aimed at providing additional water to Karachi.

The new canal is part of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPPs) plan to address the water supply issues of Karachi.

The canal, which supplies 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to the city, has faced challenges due to leakage and spillage, limiting its capacity.

To address this issue, Sindh government has undertaken the construction of a new canal, which, once completed, will increase water supply to over 100 MGD.

Barrister Wahab stated that 87 percent of the canal’s construction work has already been completed, and the project is expected to be fully functional by August 2025.

This development is a part of the ongoing efforts by the PPP Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who has prioritized resolving Karachi’s water shortage issues.

Last month, the CEO of the Karachi Water Corporation, Engineer Syed Salahuddin Ahmed, stressed the urgent need for a $4 billion investment to upgrade the city’s water and sewage infrastructure.

During a visit by a high-level Austrian delegation to the Water Corporation’s head office, Ahmed discussed the pressing challenges and recent reforms in the water sector.

The delegation included Austrian Trade Commissioner for Pakistan Johannes Brenner and CEO of Hydrophil, Gerald Eder, alongside local representatives from the Vienna-based firm.

Ahmed highlighted the corporation’s ongoing initiatives to modernize water supply and sewage management systems under its new administration.
