The number of dengue virus cases in Pakistan has surpassed 20,000, with 10 deaths reported so far this year.
Despite the arrival of winter, the dengue mosquito remains uncontrolled, and cases continue to rise across the country.
According to a report from the National Institute of Health (NIH), covering data from January 1 to November 15, 2024, a total of 20,057 dengue cases have been recorded, with Balochistan reporting the highest number of cases at 6,958, while, no deaths have been reported in Balochistan.
Punjab has reported 5,405 cases and 8 deaths, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has seen 3,649 cases and two deaths.
Azad Kashmir recorded 245 cases, former FATA had 46, and Islamabad reported 3,754 cases, with no fatalities.
The first death from dengue was reported in July, with the peak of 7 deaths occurring in September. The data shows a steady increase in cases, especially in the months of May, June, September, and October.
Earlier this month, cases of mosquito-borne illnesses continued to surge across Sindh, with health officials reporting over 267,000 cases from January through early November 2024, as per the data released from the Vector Borne Disease Directorate General Health Services.
In the last two weeks alone, malaria cases have also surged with over 17,000 cases reported across multiple cities in Sindh.
The statistics reveal malaria as the most widespread, with 265,021 cases, followed by dengue with 2,179 cases, a death reported in Karachi, and 189 cases of chikungunya.
