Mayor, Murtaza Wahab, has announced significant progress in addressing the ongoing water crisis in Karachi.
During a visit to the Pipri Pumping Station, he revealed that a new 4.5 km long, 72-inch diameter pipeline is being laid as part of a project aimed at enhancing Karachi’s water distribution system with a total cost of the project estimated at Rs 2.3 billion.
Wahab highlighted the importance of this new pipeline, noting that the current system provides 70 million gallons of water to Karachi daily.
However, up to 300,000 gallons of water were being wasted each day due to leakage. The new pipeline is expected to help curb this wastage and improve the overall efficiency of the water supply to the city.
The mayor also stressed that the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) is committed to solving Karachi’s water issues, with further such projects planned in line with the vision of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto.

The pipeline laying work is expected to be completed by February 2025, marking a significant step toward addressing one of Karachi’s most pressing issues.
Earlier to this, Karachi’s 19th-century Jamila Pumping Station was brought back into operation after extensive repairs, aimed at resolving persistent sewerage problems in the old city areas.
Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, joined by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, inaugurated the restored facility in Usmanabad area of Lyari, where new machinery and standby generators have been installed to ensure an uninterrupted supply of water to the residents.
Talking to reporters after the inauguration, Mayor Wahab explained that the pumping station’s capacity was nearly doubled, increasing from 9 million gallons to 17 million gallons, which is expected to improve sewage management across Lyari, Saddar, Garden, and other South district regions.
He noted that despite the fact that the past mayors, federal and provincial ministers were elected from Lyari, little had been done to update the colonial-era facility until now.
