PMD predicts light to moderate showers in Karachi in next 24 hours

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted that Karachi may experience another spell of light to moderate rain within the next 24 hours. This comes as a continuation of the recent light rain showers that have provided relief from the intense heat that gripped the city last month.

According to the Met Office, a 10-kilometer per hour wind is currently blowing from the west, and the city’s maximum temperature is expected to hover around 32°C. The humidity level remains high, standing at 89%, while the minimum temperature recorded earlier today was 27.5°C.

The light rain spells experienced in recent weeks have brought a much-needed break from the oppressive heat, making the weather more pleasant for Karachi’s residents. However, the city’s weather remains unpredictable, with light to moderate rain expected in the coming hours.

Weather expert Jawad Memon provided further insights into the weather conditions, stating, "Light rain may occur in Karachi due to cloud cover. There may be moderate rain in a few areas.” He also noted that a light sea breeze is currently blowing through the city, which may contribute to the likelihood of rain, particularly in Karachi’s northeastern areas later in the day.

While Karachi anticipates more rain, the PMD has also forecasted wet weather for other parts of the country. Rain, accompanied by strong winds, is expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and several other areas of Punjab from Wednesday (August 14) through August 18.

The forecast includes rain in popular hill stations like Murree and Galyat, as well as other regions such as Chakwal, Gujrat, and Gujranwala. Additional areas expected to experience rain showers include Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Sahiwal, Jhang, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara, and Pakpattan.

The Met Office also noted that coastal areas of Sindh are likely to experience a partially cloudy atmosphere, with the possibility of light rain showers. This weather pattern is part of the monsoon season, which has already brought varying levels of rainfall to different parts of the country.

Karachi’s recent weather patterns have been characterized by sporadic rain showers that have significantly cooled down the city, especially after the sweltering conditions experienced in July. The forecasted rain, although light, is expected to contribute to maintaining the pleasant weather that Karachiites have been enjoying.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially during periods of moderate rain, as waterlogging and traffic disruptions are common in Karachi during the rainy season. The city’s drainage system often struggles to cope with heavy rainfall, leading to localized flooding in low-lying areas.

The PMD’s forecast provides a glimmer of hope for continued relief from the heat, but it also underscores the need for preparedness in case of unexpected heavy downpours. As the city braces for more rain, authorities and citizens alike are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.
