Persistent street crimes in Karachi raise concerns

As 2023 nears its end, Karachi continues to grapple with persistent street crimes, with 130 individuals losing their lives to snatching incidents in the port city, according to a report by The News. The crime rate this year has seen an increase compared to 2022, rising from a daily rate of 240 to 247 in 2023. Robbers claimed the lives of 130 individuals and injured more than 600, challenging the government’s assertions of successful efforts to curb street crime.

The Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) reported over 82,632 street crime incidents in Karachi this year. Despite government initiatives, the city has seen an upward trend in murder and robbery cases. In 2023, a total of 619 people were reported murdered, with street crimes proving to be a significant challenge.

Concerns about street crime are underscored by the CPLC report, revealing August as the worst month with 8,207 reported incidents, including mobile phone snatching, car theft, motorcycle theft, and other crimes. The data provides a monthly breakdown of street crime incidents, showcasing the persistent challenge faced by Karachi in maintaining public safety and security.
