The Sindh administration has proposed holding local government elections in Karachi in two stages.
According to reports, "the proposal will be sent to the electoral commission to seek its judgement on the topic.”
"The administration made this recommendation due to the deployment of police contingents in flood-affected districts,” sources stated.
According to the government proposal, "available police personnel will be deployed for the first part of the local councils’ election, and it will subsequently be posted for the second stage of the election.”
"Holding the election in two parts will make it more comfortable for the administration,” the province government said to the electoral commission in its proposal.
It should be noted that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) determined on Tuesday that local council elections in Karachi, as well as by-elections for national and provincial assemblies, will take place on the planned dates.
The ECP had already set the dates for local government elections in Karachi division on October 23 and by-elections in nine National Assembly and three provincial assembly constituencies throughout the nation on October 16.
Among these are NA-22 (Mardan-III), NA-24 (Charsadda-II), NA-31 (Peshawar-V), NA-45 (Kurram-I), NA-108 (Faisalabad-VIII), NA-118 (Nankana Sahib-II), NA-237 (Malir-II), NA-239 (Korangi-I), NA-157 (Multan-IV), PP-139 (She (Khanewal-VII).
The second phase of Sindh’s local government elections was initially set for July 24. It was, however, postponed twice.
