‘Foreign-threat letter’ can be shown to chief justice: Govt

Federal ministers Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday said that the government is ready to present the letter before the Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial. They addressed a press conference in Islamabad.

Umar said that the letter clearly mentions a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan although it was received before the opposition submitted the no-trust move in the National Assembly Secretariat on March 8.

The minister said that the letter is a proof that the no-confidence motion is an international conspiracy.

He said the letter threatens that if the no-trust motion against Imran Khan fails there will be repercussions.

Separately, Prime Minister Imran Khan told a meeting of party spokesperson that the letter was received on March 7, a day before the no-confidence motion was submitted.

Imran Khan also said that since the letter involved Pakistan’s foreign policy concerns, it could be shared only with select few people.

Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry told the press conference that the letter had already been shared with the military leadership of the country.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday waved the letter in front of a PTI rally at Islamabad’s Parade Ground and said that he was ready to discuss its contents in “off-the-record” conversations.

Imran Khan did not name the country behind the letter but he repeatedly said that he was being targeted in a foreign-funded conspiracy and the letter was the written evidence of the conspiracy.

The letter has sparked a debate in the country, especially about its origins and contents.

Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif on Monday offered Imran Khan his support if he presents the said letter before the National Assembly and media. “Khan Sahab, I will support you, if foreign intervention to topple the incumbent government was proved,” Shehbaz Sharif said at at press conference of opposition parties.
