Gilgit: 14 die, 12 missing as wedding bus plunges into river

In a tragic bus accident, a bride was the sole survivor among 27 passengers, while the rescue officials have so far recovered 14 bodies, with several passengers still reported missing.

The incident took place yesterday as the vehicle, carrying 27 passengers including the driver, reportedly struck an obstacle and plunged into the Indus River below Thalchi Bridge in Gilgit.

Deputy Commissioner of Astore, Muhammad Tariq, informed the media that the coaster was entirely submerged, complicating rescue efforts.

Rescue officials from both Diamer and Astore districts were dispatched to the scene immediately after the accident, where they managed to recover 14 bodies.

Locals rescued the bride, who had surfaced before drowning, and she was promptly taken to Gilgit Hospital, where the doctor reported her condition as stable.

Rescue 1122 teams, led by District Emergency Officer Tahir Shah, are continuing their search under challenging conditions, hindered by low temperatures, fast-flowing water, and poor visibility.

Authorities have alerted local residents along the riverbanks to remain vigilant for the missing bodies.

The search operation remains ongoing as rescue teams are attempting to recover all passengers.
