Karachi mayor opens colonial-era pumping station after renovation

Karachi’s 19th-century Jamila Pumping Station was brought back into operation after extensive repairs, aimed at resolving persistent sewerage problems in the old city areas.

Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, joined by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, inaugurated the restored facility in Usmanabad area of Lyari, where new machinery and standby generators have been installed to ensure an uninterrupted supply of water to the residents.

Talking to reporters after the inauguration, Mayor Wahab explained that the pumping station’s capacity was nearly doubled, increasing from 9 million gallons to 17 million gallons, which is expected to improve sewage management across Lyari, Saddar, Garden, and other South district regions.

He noted that despite the fact that the past mayors, federal and provincial ministers were elected from Lyari, little had been done to update the colonial-era facility until now.

“After receiving requests from local residents, we successfully completed this project to enhance the station’s machinery,” he said.

"We’ve installed five new imported pumps, and standby generators will counter power outages,” Mayor Wahab stated.

He also highlighted Lyari’s transformation, with public spaces like Cheel Chowk becoming accessible due to law and order improvements by the PPP government.

The mayor highlighted concerns about the misuse of land allocated by the Sindh government to Pakistan Railways for railway tracks.

He pointed out that, instead of developing infrastructure for rail transport, housing societies, petrol pumps, and buildings were being constructed on this state property.

Earlier this week, the Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah sought assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the TP-4 water treatment plant in Karachi.

CM Sindh held a meeting with Xiaoqin (Emma) Fan, the Country Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), at CM House, to discuss ongoing projects across the province.

The discussions focused on collaborative efforts in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects, especially for flood victims, and a solar initiative aimed at providing affordable energy solutions.
