The Sindh Government on Wednesday shared a plan to collect two taxes on behalf of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) from the citizens of Karachi through the monthly K-Electric bill.
The two taxes include a fire tax and a conservancy tax.
The proposal was discussed in a meeting of power, utility and municipal department officials chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.
A statement released from the Chief Minister House stated that the meeting had been held to discuss tax collection of the KMC and the District Municipal Corporation (DMC) through citizen’s KE bills.
The chief minister maintained in the meeting that the taxes will be imposed in order to strengthen the local government and local tax collection.
Shah told the meeting that Rs100 and Rs200 will be charged respectively from two categories of consumers [to be carved by the provincial administration] in the KE bill.
“If formally signed, the agreement will help the KMC collect Rs9 billion annually,” Shah said, while recalling that the KMC currently collects Rs210m a year from the two taxes.
