Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Sirajul Haq has called on the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to retract the notification issued for the elected Karachi mayor. He voiced his concerns during a protest in front of the ECP office in Islamabad, alleging that the commission had treated Jamaat-e-Islami unjustly in the mayoral elections.
Sirajul Haq criticized the ECP, pointing out the surprise over the defeat of candidates with 900,000 votes and the victory of those with 300,000 votes. He questioned why a political party with the support of 193 members was declared the winner over a party with the support of 153 members.
The JI leader expressed dissatisfaction with the ECP’s failure to respond to their letter and accused institutions of neglecting the rights of citizens. He also criticized the PPP chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and alleged that the party aimed to continue its corruption.
Sirajul Haq emphasized the need for justice and rejected the rule of corruption, stating that the JI cannot be surpassed by “test tube leaders.” He further criticized the federal government and predicted the downfall of the “Titanic of Islamabad” and the diminishing success of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).
On June 19, Murtaza Wahab and Salman Abdullah Murad from the PPP were sworn in as Karachi mayor and deputy mayor, respectively. Wahab secured 173 votes in the election held on June 15, defeating JI’s candidate, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, who obtained 160 votes.
