The Sindh government has taken a progressive step by announcing special training programs for women to become bus drivers, specifically for its flagship women-only pink buses project, as reported by The News.
In a significant decision, Provincial Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, approved the initiative during the 10th board meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) on Wednesday. The move is in line with the vision of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who aims to empower women in all fields.
The inclusion of female bus drivers is expected to not only promote gender equality but also enhance the sense of safety and security for women during their daily commutes.
During the meeting, the board also discussed providing subsidies for the People’s Bus Service, following approval from the cabinet. Additionally, the feasibility studies for the second phase of the People’s Bus Service were reviewed. This phase will include the introduction of 500 buses and the implementation of an environment-friendly electric taxi service.
The implementation of the second phase is anticipated to significantly alleviate travel problems for the public, providing much-needed relief. Furthermore, the introduction of environment-friendly electric taxis is not only expected to have a positive impact on the environment but also create new employment opportunities.
The SMTA board meeting also addressed the progress of the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, a vital initiative aimed at improving public transportation in the region.
The meeting was attended by prominent officials, including Transport Secretary Saleem Rajput, SMTA Managing Director Kamal Dayo, Traffic Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema, planning and development department representative Sikandar Shaikh, and Karachi Transport Chief Executive Officer Tufail Paliju. This move showcases the government’s commitment to promoting women’s empowerment, safe transportation, and sustainable development in the province.
