Sindh fact-finding committee unveils unfair treatment of 11th class students in Karachi Inter Board exams

The Fact Finding Committee established by the Sindh Government has concluded its investigation into the widespread failure of 11th class students in the Karachi Inter Board exams, uncovering instances of injustice and systemic failures that have adversely impacted the students.

Appointed by Sindh Chief Minister Justice Retired Maqbool Baqir in response to student protests, the committee, led by NED University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodhi, meticulously reviewed approximately 300 examination papers. Its findings shed light on various factors contributing to the students’ unfavorable outcomes.

The committee’s report highlights systemic challenges that have plagued students throughout the academic year. It cites the failure of the Sindh Textbook Board to timely provide essential learning materials, with many students deprived of textbooks until well into the academic term. Additionally, delays in providing sample papers aligned with the syllabus compounded the difficulties faced by students.

One of the most glaring revelations of the report is the stringent marking criteria employed by teachers during the evaluation process. Despite opportunities for leniency, many students received disproportionately low marks, exacerbating the overall failure rate.

In response to its findings, the committee has recommended the provision of grace marks to mitigate the impact of unfair grading on students. The report, detailing these recommendations and its comprehensive findings, is slated for submission to the caretaker chief minister for further action.

The committee’s investigation underscores the urgent need for reforms within the education system to ensure fairness, transparency, and equitable opportunities for students. Addressing the systemic shortcomings identified in the report is imperative to uphold the principles of educational justice and support the academic success of students in Karachi and beyond.
