Sindh Chief Minister, Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar, has taken steps to implement an Urban Rebuilding Plan aimed at the construction of high-rise buildings on vacant plots in Martin, Clayton, and Jahangir Quarters. The decision to move forward with this plan involves signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Ministry of Housing & Works.
In a video link meeting with the Federal Ministry of Housing & Works, attended by Federal Secretary Dr. Shahzad Bangash and his team from Islamabad, Chief Minister Maqbool Baqar outlined his vision for urban development. Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Chairman P&D Shakil Mangnejo, Secretary Local Government Manzoor Shaikh, DG P&D Asad Zamin, and other officials were also present in the meeting.
The chief minister highlighted the Urban Rebuilding Plan, focusing on the construction of high-rise plazas on the vacant plots of Martin, Clayton, Jahangir Quarters, and Pakistan Quarters, all of which are in a deteriorated condition. These quarters, established over 240 acres, have faced neglect since the relocation of the Capital in 1959.
It was noted that federal employees, upon retirement, did not vacate official accommodations, leading to encroachments and improper maintenance. The Urban Rebuilding Project aims to enhance housing conditions, infrastructure, public services, and stimulate economic activity, generating new jobs and economic opportunities.
Following discussions, it was agreed that an MoU should be signed between the Sindh and federal governments to proceed with the project. The chief minister instructed his team to prepare a draft for the MoU, which will be shared with the federal government for signing within the next two weeks. The initiative reflects the commitment to revitalizing urban spaces and addressing housing challenges for the betterment of residents in the designated areas.
