The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) held a consultative meeting in Islamabad to discuss caretaker governments, upcoming elections, and the census. According to sources, the meeting resulted in the party finalizing the name of Shoaib Siddiqui, former Karachi commissioner, for the position of Sindh’s caretaker chief minister. The party’s delegation is set to meet with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today to further discuss the matters raised during the consultation.
As the federal and provincial assemblies near the end of their terms, the formation of caretaker governments is underway in preparation for the general polls expected in October. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah will continue his duties for a few days until the caretaker setup is established. The process of appointing a caretaker government in Sindh follows Article 224 of the Constitution. CM Shah will request three names for the caretaker chief minister from the leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Haleem Adil Sheikh. If an impasse arises, a committee will be formed to reach a consensus on one name within three days. If needed, the Election Commission of Pakistan will make the final decision within two days. The selected nominee will serve as the interim CM until the formation of the new government in the province, including the authority to appoint cabinet members.
