The Karachi Safe City project was formally launched with a ceremony held at the Security and Emergency Services Division Headquarters, Karachi.
This is a joint venture between the Government of Sindh and the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC).
In 2016, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had directed to start the project which was delayed due to various reasons.
In January 2022, Dr. Maqsood Ahmed, DIG Security and Emergency Services Division, was given additional charge of DG Sindh Safe Cities Authority.
In this regard, several meetings were held under the chairmanship of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Secretary Sindh Sohail Rajput and DG Sindh Safe Cities Authority.
The Chief Secretary Sindh formed a committee under the supervision of DG Sindh Safe Cities Authority to review the project technically and financially.
After lengthy deliberations with all stakeholders, it has been decided that the project cost, which was earlier Rs. 44 billion, will be reduced to Rs. 22 billion keeping in view the improvement in quality.
DG Sindh Safe Cities Authority Dr. Maqsood Ahmed presided over a meeting in which representatives of Sindh Safe Cities Authority, NRTC, members of technical committee and all stakeholders of the project participated to formally announce the launch of the project.
