Retail prices of meat witness surge despite official price list in Karachi

Retail prices of beef and veal have surged in Karachi over the last 1.5 months due to a rise in wholesale prices, despite the official price list set by the Commissioner Karachi. Veal beef prices now stand at Rs. 900-950 per kg and boneless beef at Rs. 1,100-1,200 per kg. Meanwhile, mutton prices have soared to Rs. 1,700-1,800 per kg, with some markets even selling it for Rs. 2,000-2,200 per kg. Although the Commissioner Karachi had fixed the mutton price at Rs. 1,400 per kg, it is currently unavailable in the city. Retailers are attributing the price hikes to increasing meat exports. However, Pakistan’s meat export prices have remained stable, and the country’s meat and meat preparation exports have increased to 69,072 tonnes ($302m) in 9MFY23 from 56,397 tonnes ($249m) in the same period last year. The prices of live birds and chicken meat have also gone up, with live birds and meat prices now at Rs. 430-470 and Rs. 700-780 per kg, respectively.
