PMD warns of heavy rain, strong winds as cyclone approaches Karachi

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning regarding the approaching cyclone in the Arabian Sea, stating that it will result in a storm surge and heavy rainfall. Thatta, Sajawal, and Badin districts are expected to receive 300mm to 400mm of rain, while Karachi may experience up to 100mm of rainfall.

The cyclone is projected to pass between Keti Bandar and Indian Gujarat on June 15, bringing waves of 10 to 12 feet and gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour to the Pakistani seaport. Rainfall and strong winds are forecasted to begin in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, and Mirpurkhas from tomorrow onwards.

Precautionary measures are being taken in Karachi, with the closure of Seaview road and restrictions on beach access from a local restaurant to Khayaban-e-Ittihad.

As the cyclone approaches Karachi, the temperature is expected to rise, with mercury likely to reach 41°C. The weather in the port city is anticipated to remain hot and humid under the influence of the cyclone, with the current temperature already touching 34°C. The Met Office forecasts a maximum temperature of 39°C to 41°C, which may even touch 45°C, with a minimum temperature of 30°C.

The wind speed in Karachi is currently 18 kilometers per hour from the southeast, with a humidity ratio of 41%. The cyclone has been moving northwards for the past 12 hours and is currently located 580 kilometers south of Thatta. It is expected to continue its northward movement and cross southeast Sindh and Indian Gujarat on the afternoon of June 15.

Sindh Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz has highlighted that the intensity of the storm is increasing due to climate change. It is projected to take three to four days for the cyclone to subside once it hits the region. It is crucial for residents to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions and follow safety guidelines issued by the authorities.
