Phuleli canal bridge approval and crackdown on fertilizer black marketing by CM Sindh

In a significant move towards enhancing the infrastructure of Hyderabad, Chief Minister Justice (R) Maqbool Mubarak Baqir has given the green light to a groundbreaking project for the construction of a bridge over the Phuleli Canal. The decision, announced during a high-profile meeting at Government College University, Hyderabad, marks a monumental step in addressing the city’s growing needs.

The approved bridge, estimated to cost Rs. 250 million, aims to connect Abdul Sattar Edhi Road to Government College University, facilitating smoother and quicker commutes for the students and residents in the area. This announcement came after a thorough inspection and discussion during a session chaired by Chief Minister Baqir, attended by key officials, including Minister for Irrigation Ashoor Lal and Commissioner Hyderabad Khalid Hyder Shah.

The old Phuleli Canal, which traverses the heart of Hyderabad, has been facing multiple challenges, including encroachments, pollution, and ineffective drainage during the monsoon season. The decision to construct the bridge addresses not only the transportation needs of the community but also environmental concerns related to the canal.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Baqir emphasized the urgency of the project, instructing officials to expedite the approval process for the project’s PC-I within 15 days. The move is expected to bring relief to thousands of students attending Government College University, who will benefit from the improved connectivity.

The government has also allocated funds in the 2023-24 Annual Development Program (ADP #1839) for the bridge construction, reflecting its commitment to timely execution and completion of the project.

In addition to the infrastructure initiative, Chief Minister Baqir addressed concerns related to the pollution of the Phuleli Canal. He directed the Water Board to take immediate measures to curb the discharge of contaminated water into the canal, aiming to mitigate the health risks posed to residents in areas downstream.

The Chief Minister’s visit extended beyond the project approval, as he conducted a comprehensive inspection of a local hospital, highlighting the need for improved facilities and better management. During the visit, he interacted with patients, reviewed the hospital’s operations, and ordered necessary upgrades to ensure the provision of quality healthcare services.

Chief Minister Baqir’s commitment to holistic development was evident as he addressed various issues during his tour, including crackdowns on black marketing of fertilizers and improvements in the agricultural sector. Farmers’ concerns were heard, and orders were issued to maintain proper monitoring of fertilizer storage and distribution.

The Chief Minister also visited police stations, acknowledging the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with street crimes and drug peddling. He emphasized the need for a coordinated effort to ensure the safety and security of citizens.

The approval of the Phuleli Canal Bridge project and the Chief Minister’s proactive approach to address multiple issues underscore a commitment to the comprehensive development of Hyderabad, promising a brighter future for the city and its residents.
