Pakistan Railways to revive Awam Express after suspension due to 2022 floods

Pakistan Railways has announced the revival of the Awam Express, which had been suspended since the floods in Sindh in 2022. The Awam Express operates on the route from Karachi to Lahore and Lahore to Peshawar. Directives have been issued to carriage shop officials at the Railway Headquarters to prepare 18 bogies, accommodating economy class, lower A, and AC business class coaches for the relaunch, scheduled in December.

The Awam Express, one of the longest continuous running services, covers a published distance of 1,721 kilometers along the Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line. The decision to resume operations comes as part of Pakistan Railways’ efforts to restore services that were impacted by the floods.

In addition to the Awam Express, authorities have granted a one-month extension in services for the Shalimar Express train, which operates on the Karachi-Lahore route. This decision has been implemented with immediate effect. It’s worth noting that in May 2023, Pakistan Railways had revived the high-speed Shalimar Express passenger train after an eight-month hiatus.
