Virat Kohli once again proved his dominance over Pakistan in ICC tournaments, crafting a masterful unbeaten 100 to guide India to a commanding six-wicket victory in the Champions Trophy on Sunday.
The win all but secures India’s place in the semifinals, placing them atop Group A with four points.
In contrast, Pakistan is on the brink of elimination after suffering their second consecutive defeat in the tournament they are hosting.
Chasing a challenging 242, India relied on Kohli’s 51st ODI century, Shreyas Iyer’s composed 56 off 67 balls, and Shubman Gill’s brisk 46 off 52 deliveries to seal the win with more than seven overs to spare.
Kohli, overcoming his recent dip in form, delivered a flawless 111-ball knock, laced with seven boundaries. The 36-year-old batter also became the fastest player to reach 14,000 ODI runs during his innings.
Pakistan’s hopes of defending their total rested on their pace attack, but Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf struggled to contain Kohli’s brilliance. Despite an early breakthrough when Afridi’s yorker dismissed Rohit Sharma (20 off 15), the Indian batting lineup remained unfazed.
Leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed, expected to trouble Kohli given the Indian batter’s struggles against spin, managed a few testing deliveries but failed to create a significant impact. Kohli played him cautiously, rotating the strike and avoiding unnecessary risks.
With precise shot selection and clinical execution, Kohli neutralized Pakistan’s bowling attack, ensuring India cruised to victory and leaving their arch-rivals on the verge of an early exit.
