After Karachi, a significant increase in XDR typhoid cases has been observed in Islamabad. Head of Infectious Diseases at PIMS, Professor Naseem Akhtar, revealed that 60% of typhoid patients seeking treatment at PIMS Hospital are diagnosed with XDR Typhoid and are coming from Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Kashmir.
Both adults and children are affected by XDR typhoid, and the cost of antibiotic treatment alone for such patients exceeds one and a half lakh rupees. Professor Naseem Akhtar emphasized that third-generation antibiotics are ineffective against XDR typhoid. The disease is primarily transmitted through contaminated water and food, and the unnecessary and excessive use of antibiotics exacerbates the problem.
Professor Naseem Akhtar, Head of Infectious Diseases at PIMS, urged the public to take precautionary measures such as consuming clean water and properly cooked food to prevent XDR typhoid. Awareness and adherence to these preventive measures are crucial in combating the spread of the disease.
