KWSB, DHOs instructed to chlorinate water amid the fear of Naegleria


District health officers of Karachi and Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) have been advised to work alongside and ensure the city’s water being chlorinated.


The brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria Fowleri has taken the lives of two citizens in two days, taking the tally to sixth death in the city.


Dr. Akram Sultan, the office of the director health has issued an advisory to avert the use of unchlorinated water and has guided health officials to prevent primary amoebic meningeocephalitis (PAM) which causes Naegleria Fowleri into human body.


Six people have lost the battle of their lives against this fatal disease this year, five of them were the residents of Karachi while one belonging to Lasbela district of Balochistan.


Health officials including DHOs and medical superintendents have been advised to start awareness campaign about this disease to beware the public.


“There is a need to assess the level of chlorination in all major water reservoirs in the city, while cleanliness must be maintained at all the reservoirs in the city. Water tanker service providers should be asked to ensure provision of chlorinated water to the people.” Said the officials.


The recent victim was a 19 years old guy from Malir, who went to the picnic to a farmhouse where he likely contracted with the disease in the pool water.
