Karachi Safe City project cost doubles before its launch

The cost of highly eulogized Karachi Safe City Project comprising installing 10,000 CCTV cameras to eradicate crime and restore law and order has doubled while the project has yet to even begin.

According to the initial plan of safe city project conceived back in 2011, total cost was estimated at of Rs10 billion for it’s lay out, however, after a nine-year period, the cost has reportedly doubled today to Rs20 billion. Also, there’s little chance it will inititate in the near future.

The project included installation of CCTV cameras and establishing its command and control centres across the city besides introducing face and vehicle recognition software and biometric systems to profile and identify culprits.

Although the Sindh government earlier claimed that it would soon launch the project, the multiplying cost of the project which followed the uncalled for delay from the provincial government has raised serious concerns on its seriousness.

It may be recalled here that CM Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah directed earlier this week the concerned officials to speed up work on Safe City project.

In the said session, Shah said Rs10 billion had been allocated for the installation of 10,000 CCTV cameras under this project. He directed officials to expedite work on project and complete installation of cameras ASAP.
