As per the Global Crime Index, Karachi currently ranks 93rd which is 5 points ahead of that obtained in January 2020 and 22 points as compared to ratings from last year.
The ratings were released by Numbeo which defined the index as, ”an estimation of overall level of crime in a given city or a country.”
As explained by Numbeo crime levels lower than 20 is very low, crime levels between 20 and 40 as low, crime levels between 40 and 60 is moderate, crime levels between 60 and 80 is high and finally crime levels higher than 80 is very high.
As reported by local news media, Sindh Inspector General of Police Syed Kaleem Imam stated that the reduction in crimes was due to stricter policing which had significantly reduced incidents of kidnapping, murders, robberies and target killings throughout the city.
Only in 2014, Karachi had received an alarming score, ranking at number 6th. However, over the last six years the ranking has consistently improved, moving to 47 in 2017 and 71 in the mid of 2019.
Lahore came at 236 with a “low” crime index of 38.25 and Islamabad at 306 with a crime level of 29.44.
Caracas, capital of Venezuelan, ranked the worst while Abu Dhabi turned out to be the safest city in the world.
Delhi, the capital of India, received a rating of 70 on the index.
