While cleaning the choked manholes and nullahs, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) said used condoms trashed in gutters cause sewerage problems in the city, a local media reported.
The KWSB recovered huge amount of discarded condoms while clearing a sewerage line, a spokesperson of KWSB said.
This waste of contraceptive affected the flow of sewage while causing serious choking.
A KWSB official said the huge quantity of used contraceptives was found while a team was cleaning a sewerage line in Clifton Block 2.
But this isn’t the first time they encountered this dilemma as the KWSB says they often find items like these in sewer lines across the city.
Water solidifies and sometimes inflates such wastage, like these condoms, up to 400 times their size which then choke manholes and sewage, the KWSB spokesperson explained.
Such items must be thrown away in trash cans where they belong in any civilized society, he regretted.
The KWSB stressed the need for generating awareness about the issue and urged government departments and social organisations to play their role.
