Karachi braces for cyclone Biparjoy, DHA residents advised to evacuate

Karachi, the bustling metropolis, is preparing itself for the impact of Cyclone Biparjoy as the sea level along the shoreline rises, prompting authorities to issue evacuation notices to residents in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to move to safer locations.

The cyclone, now downgraded to a very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS), has approached closer and is currently situated approximately 470km south of Karachi.

As a result of the cyclonic system, the meteorological department has predicted the likelihood of dust storms, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds of 60-80 Kmph in Karachi, Hyderabad, and other cities in Sindh from June 14 to 16.

Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman, expressing concern, cautioned that Karachi might experience urban flooding due to the magnitude and intensity of the winds. She emphasized the importance of taking the advisories issued by the Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and Balochistan PDMA seriously for coastal areas.

Provincial authorities have heightened their vigilance, and emergency measures have been declared in various departments, including health, civic agencies, and rescue services, to effectively respond to the situation.

Evacuation notices have been issued by the DHA, urging its residents to relocate to safer areas until the cyclone situation is resolved. The voluntary evacuation is being recommended to prioritize the safety and well-being of the community.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department has forecasted a hot and humid weather condition for Karachi, with dusty winds prevailing throughout the city. There are also chances of rain accompanied by thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening. The maximum temperature is expected to range between 37°C and 39°C, while the recorded minimum temperature stands at 30.5°C. The humidity level in the air is currently at 58%.

The situation remains dynamic, and updates will be provided to keep the public informed and ensure their safety.
