A baby boy born to a 35 year old mother who was diagnosed with Covid 19 has tested negative for the virus in his initial tests, reported Dawn News. As of yet, both the child and mother are doing well.
This is the second such case emerging in Karachi. Earlier in April, another baby had been born to a woman who had tested positive for the Coronavirus.
In a press release on May 7 UNICEF noted, “Millions of pregnant mothers and babies born during COVID-19 pandemic threatened by strained health systems and disruptions in services.”
The organization mentioned how South Asian countries were to bear the brunt of the matter as they had the highest birth rates and among the poorest health systems. Statistics showed that about 5 million births were expected in Pakistan during the pandemic, 20 million birth India, 2.4 million in Bangladesh and 1 million in Afghanistan.
The organization urged nations to responsibly attend to the needs of pregnant mothers and carry out regular checkups post delivery as well. There has been no conclusive Research on how pregnant mothers may transmit the disease to the fetus.
According to a study by Chinese researchers, pregnant mothers may transmit coronavirus to the fetus. The research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics, conducted a study on 33 pregnant women who had coronavirus from Wuhan City. Results showed only three babies had been infected at birth.
