Internet users across Pakistan were expected to experience slower internet speeds on April 21 due to scheduled maintenance work on an international submarine cable, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said.

According to the PTA, a power reconfiguration activity was scheduled to be carried out on a section of the SEA-ME-WE 4 (SMW4) submarine cable between 2am and 7am on April 21.

Internet Users May Experience Slow Speeds

The telecom regulator said some users could experience reduced internet speeds during the maintenance period.

The PTA said alternative measures would be taken to maintain uninterrupted internet services and meet the country’s capacity requirements during the activity.

The authority also said it would work to ensure that internet services returned to full functionality as quickly as possible after the maintenance work was completed.

Previous Submarine Cable Disruption

Pakistan has experienced internet disruptions in the past due to faults in international submarine cable systems.

In February, a cable cut in a submarine cable system located approximately 400 kilometres off the coast of Pakistan had caused internet disruptions across the country.

International submarine cables carry a significant portion of Pakistan’s internet traffic, making maintenance and faults on these systems capable of affecting internet speeds and connectivity.
