There is no direct fault line connecting Turkey and Pakistan, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), which could prevent an unusually large earthquake from occurring there.
On Monday, there was a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in southern Turkey, which was followed by a series of strong and smaller tremors. It came after a widely shared video and a flurry of unverified WhatsApp messages warning of a potential earthquake in Pakistan.
There is no evidence to support a scientific connection between the earthquakes in Pakistan and Turkey, according to a statement from PMD. It further stated that there was no direct connection or similarity between the fault lines in Pakistan and Turkey that might cause an emergency or unusual circumstance. The statement further mentioned that the department operates its own seismic monitoring network consisting of 30 remote monitoring stations.
“Every day, earthquakes of low to medium intensity are reported in the nearby parts of the nation,” said the statement.
The department also mentioned that there is a chance that Afghanistan, Iran, or Pakistan will experience significant earthquakes. Nevertheless, figuring out when and where is impossible with the technologies we have today.
