To cater for the rising cases of coronavirus across the province, Sindh Government has planned to turn Expo Centre in Karachi into a mass quarantine facility.
Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shalwani stated that he was in talks with the federal and Sindh governments to utilize the Expo Centre and other spots as isolation wards if situation was to worsen. He said that some formalities were underway currently. The Chief Minister has also asked Mr. Shalwani to make the necessary arrangement for beds and other facilities at Expo Centre.
Multiple other sites are being identified to operate as isolation wards across the province. Currently, Sukkur quarantine centre, that can accommodate at least 10,000 people, has about 151 people who have tested positive for the virus. Large residential complexes on the outskirts of Karachi are being renovated as isolation wards which can house 6000 people simultaneously.
A residential complex in the Nooriabad Industrial Area is also being converted into a quarantine facility which can accommodate 4,000 people and will be allocated to patients from lower Sindh’s districts.
Two more such isolation accommodations are being renovated in Nawabshah and Larkana.
At present, there are 57 positive coronavirus cases in Karachi and another 151 in Sukkur who are all being treated.
