ECP seeks Army, Rangers deployment for LG polls in Karachi, Hyd

The Pakistani Army and Rangers will be deployed during the local government elections in Hyderabad and Karachi, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The Pakistan Army and Rangers must be deployed, according to a letter the ECP sent to the Interior Ministry, in order to ensure peaceful elections. The deployment of the troops has been requested for peaceful polling places.

It has been requested by the Interior Ministry to guarantee the safety of the election officials in Hyderabad and Karachi.

The letter stated that “even commissioners, DROs, and candidates have requested the deployment of Rangers at polling places due to fears of violence and altercations between political rivals on election day.”

Earlier in the day, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) while rejecting the pleas of MQM-P and the Sindh government ordered to hold of local government (LG) elections in Karachi and Hyderabad on January 15.
