CBC cancels private firm’s garbage disposal contract after 36 years

Karachi’s Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) has decided to collect garbage from its jurisdiction on its own, after cancelling a three-decade-long contract with M/s NJC Limited and M/s ASB Limited.

CBC has decided it would not issue another tender for garbage collection. The work had been outsourced since 1984. Each tender was for a two-year contract that would be awarded to contractors depending on their bid. CBC had awarded the same contractor the job for the last 36 years.

A member of the CBC who did not want to be named said that the contractor was not doing a good job and while it was given time to improve, the CBC decided to manage on its own after waiting a year.

“CBC teams are working in two shifts to lift garbage from DHA jurisdictions,” the staffer said. “The shifts are morning and evening.”

The cantonment’s job is to provide DHA Phases I to VIII municipal services, including stormwater cleaning, a water supply and garbage collection

It was learned that the CBC holds complete power to make such decisions and that the two-year contract awarded to M/s NJC Limited and M/s ASB Limited was worth Rs50million.

A member of the former contractor’s firm said that while the CBC may have a better plan for disposing of garbage on its own, the company’s performance was not unsatisfactory by any means.

According to the former contractor, it had 1,200 employees and 110 vehicles covering the area. It was further alleged by the company that since their contract was cancelled the Creek Avenue Garbage Transfer Station was found to be full.
