Expressing concern over the deteriorating state of sanitation in Karachi, Caretaker Chief Minister Justice Maqbool Baqar has directed Mayor Murtaza Wahab to initiate a large-scale cleanliness drive in the city. During a meeting of local government departments, the CM emphasized the need for a clean and well-maintained city and urged the mayor to plant more trees to enhance the urban environment.
In the meeting attended by various officials, the CM also addressed the issue of idle sanitary workers who were previously engaged in defunct district municipal committees. With the sanitation work now assigned to the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), the CM directed the local government secretary to employ these workers for sanitation tasks.
Furthermore, the CM instructed the local government department to renovate or restore old buildings in the city. Notices are to be issued to residents of old buildings to improve and make them livable. The SSWMB managing director provided an update on cleanliness inspections, mentioning the clearance of garbage heaps under the Nipa Bridge.
In a separate development, the CM ordered two inquiries against the Sindh Revenue Board (SRB) and the labor department. The inquiries are related to their failure to address non-compliance issues of the Sindh Workers Welfare Fund (SWWF) and Sindh Workers Participation Fund. The CM expressed dissatisfaction, stating that timely action by these organizations could have ensured the recovery of Rs16.4 billion for workers.
These initiatives underscore the caretaker CM’s commitment to addressing sanitation challenges and ensuring the welfare of workers in the city.
